Our new In Conversation podcast explores self-harm with a focus on how it affects men in particular.
We will explain what self-harm is and how it impacts men. Guests will talk about the differences and similarities experienced by men and other genders. They will consider the barriers men face, and provide helpful advice if you self-harm or know someone that does.
This podcast is hosted by Frankee Fouin, Self-Harm Network Scotland’s Practice Development Lead. Podcast guests are: Chris Stone and Dylan Currie, both Peer Practitioners, and Professor Amy Chandler, a Sociologist from The University of Edinburgh.
The podcast team
Frankee Fouin
Frankee is Practice Development Lead at Self-Harm Network Scotland. Her role focuses on helping people across Scotland provide a more compassionate and non-judgemental response to self-harm. Her lived experience, both personally and through supporting people that she cares about, is a big motivator for her.
Dylan Currie
Dylan is a Peer Practitioner at Self-Harm Network Scotland. He is passionate about mental health and recovery in all its forms, particularly trauma, self-harm and addiction. His personal goal for this podcast was to share his experiences in a way that helps people to connect; where they listen and think: “Yeah, I’ve felt like that too…”
Chris Stone
Chris is a Peer Practitioner at Self-Harm Network Scotland. He spent over a decade working as a personal trainer and coach. During that time, Chris experienced his own mental health challenges, including self-harm, shaping his perspective and commitment to supporting others – particularly in advocating for men’s mental health.
Amy Chandler
Amy is a sociologist from the University of Edinburgh. She has been researching and writing about self-harm and suicide for over 20 years. Her research focuses on understanding connections between lived/living experiences of self-harm and social factors, especially gender, socioeconomic and other inequalities.
Episode 1: What is self-harm?
In this first episode, we talk about what self-harm actually is, particularly thinking about men.

Episode 2: Apples and Oranges
Episode 2 is called ‘Apples and Oranges’ because, when it comes to self-harm, not everything is the same. In this episode, we look at men’s experiences of self-harm, and talk about what differences and similarities there may be compared to a woman’s experience of self-harm, or someone who identifies as non-binary.

Episode 3: Barriers
Episode 3 identifies some of the barriers facing men who self-harm. Plenty of men simply aren’t getting the support that they need, so in this episode, Frankee, Chris, Dylan and Amy, think about what might stop men from asking for help, and what might stop men from getting help.

Episode 4: Moving Forward
Episode 4 is all about Moving Forward. Our panel talk about what support for self-harm looks like, how men can access support, and what things individuals who self-harm can do to support themselves. They also discuss unhelpful responses to self-harm and provide helpful advice for anyone who is worried about someone who is self-harming.
